Thank you for your question. This seems to be a complicated issue for some reason. In general, makeup artists aren't regulated or licensed in any state. If a makeup artist works for movies, television, or theater, he or she will probably want to join the Makeup Artist Local Union.

Most states require that anyone who touches another person's face, hair or body needs to be licensed. Makeup artists bypass this requirement by using tools, like brushes, puffs and sponges to apply makeup; therefore, their fingers don't touch the client's face. Some people think they have to become a cosmetologist or an esthetician to apply makeup. It's just not the case. If you have any further questions, please contact us again.
